Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT DOES THIS APP DO? WHAT PROBLEM DOES IT SOLVE?
90 Days in Europe is a purpose-built travel calculator for Europe (specifically the Schengen visa area.)
With user input, the app tallies all of your stay dates in the Schegen Area to ensure you do not overstay the 90-days within any 180-day period rule. In addition to totaling your planned stay dates, the app displays the days remaining in your current 180-day period, explains when your rolling window resets, how many days each upcoming trip will use, and provides trip validation BEFORE you book.
This “90/180 rule” is strictly enforced and requires careful tracking for compliance. Anyone found to overstay is subject to removal, fines, and a ban on future arrivals in Europe.
WHAT IS THE SCHENGEN AREA IN EUROPE?
The Schengen Area is a zone of 29 European countries that have abolished internal border controls, allowing people to move freely between member states as if within a single country. Established in 1995 through the Schengen Agreement, it is one of the most significant achievements of European integration, promoting tourism, business, and cultural exchange.
While often associated with the European Union, the Schengen Area is distinct from the EU. Most EU countries participate, but some—such as Ireland—do not, while several non-EU states, including Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, are members. An up-to-date list of member countries is available from the European Commission’s Schengen webpage.
Within the Schengen Area, travelers can cross borders without routine passport checks. However, all external borders—those between Schengen and non-Schengen nations—operate under a common visa and security policy, ensuring consistent immigration control and coordinated policing. Information sharing is facilitated through systems such as the Schengen Information System (SIS).
For short stays, non-European visitors are limited to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen zone, regardless of the number of countries visited. This “90/180 rule” is strictly enforced and requires careful tracking for compliance. Official details and calculators are available on the European Union Immigration Portal.
The Schengen framework remains a cornerstone of European mobility, symbolizing unity, trust, and cooperation—balancing the freedom of movement with collective responsibility for security.
WHAT ARE THE VISA RULES FOR VISITING A SCHENGEN COUNTRY IN EUROPE?
Non-EU nationals can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period without a visa. Both entry and exit days count toward your total. The 180-day period functions as a “rolling window” – on any given day, look back 180 days and count your total days spent in the Schengen Area. This calculation is continuous and dynamic, meaning each day advances the window by one day.
You can enter and exit multiple times, but all days spent in any Schengen country count toward the 90-day limit within the 180-day window. An uninterrupted absence of 90 days allows for a new 90-day stay. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or future entry bans.
IMPORTANT: Border officials have final authority on entry and duration of stay. Always verify your specific situation with immigration authorities or your embassy.
